Job Alert – Summer Break with some Bangs

The Commissioners’ college held its last weekly meeting before the summer break on Wednesday – just to see their vacation starting with three major bangs: Poland will face major consequences up to the suspension of its voting rights if proceeding with its plans to gain control over the judiciary and even firing supreme court judges, Trump’s sanctions against companies dealing with Russia are likely to impact significantly on European firms – and it turns out that VW was not the only carmaker cheating – in fact, they all did.

Which means some Commission officials will have to work over the next weeks – with the relief that we are back to business as usual and can forget about the Brexit mess for a few weeks.  Juncker spoke strong words of retaliation within days against the US, DG Competition with Margrethe  Vestager will continue to build its reputation as the EU’s true hero whilst going after carmakers’ collusions. Back to business – that really is a relief, and although we should not forget that especially the carmakers’ and the Polish case are no news at all, it is a positive sign that the Commission is finally doing its job again – which is to protect the European single market with all agreements that have been made by its members.
