In the midst of national elections, Brussels celebrations of the dinosaur of political successes promised to citizens go by with little notice: roaming is abolished as of 15 June (well, almost…).
Indeed, more importantly, politics in Europe stays exciting: two big elections with very different outcomes will have a big impact not only on domestic politics, but on the future of the EU. Whilst Theresa May utterly miscalculated her chance to gain a strong mandate for her BREXIT negotiations, Emmanuel Macron can now count on a strong majority in the legislative elections and is hyped enormously – and all French hopes are on him. He faces the challenge of aligning his movement of young and diverse followers to succeed in the challenges of day-to-day politics. Theresa May, on the other hand, has ended up in the worst possible position: losing the absolute majority of her party means that Brexit negotiations will become even harder – no clear line on the side of the UK. What these two elections demonstrate overall: even though the voter turnout in France was rather catastrophic, democracy still works, and we should positively react to the fact that politicians now have to deliver on the challenges put to them by the citizens.
