May, Macron, Erdogan – Europe is in election mode, for better or for worse. Whilst Turkey has, by a slight but distinct majority, strengthened Erdogan, Theresa May has surprisingly called for elections in Great Britain on 8 June – thereby temporarily stealing the show from France, where the first round of the Presidential election is held on Sunday. Nowhere much to look forward to or be happy about: Erdogan’s take on democracy is leading Turkey further away than ever from the EU and democratic values that member states subscribe to. Very worrying: Turkish citizens in many EU member states overwhelmingly supported Erdogan – whilst they do not even have to live through the consequences of their vote. In Great Britain, Theresa May enjoys strong support in the polls – her strategic move makes a lot of sense and might give her a strong public mandate for the Brexit negotiations, manifesting the path out of the EU. France, on the other hand, stays exiting – with everyone expecting a second round of Marine Le Pen against one of the other candidates, and little chances of her succeeding in it. However, we have seen Donald Trump getting elected in the US, and Brexit is on its way of becoming reality. Every people gets the government it deserves, said philosopher Jean-Marie Le Maistre.
