She has done it – Theresa May has triggered Art. 50, and Brussels has acknowledged solemnly. Whilst the mourning is still strong, Brussels and London now get back into action mode – and Brussels is definitely strong at following processes and pursuing them to their very end. And coming to terms with each other promises to be very difficult: Commission President Tusk has outlined the EU’s negotiation guidelines – and hands Spain a veto power over any decision involving Gibraltar. Meanwhile, Members of the European Parliament had an easy time agreeing a resolution on what they want to see respected in the negotiations – unsurprisingly, their biggest issue is that being outside the EU must be punished by less favourable conditions than being a member of the club.
Such emotions are all emerging a bit late in the game: they were needed earlier on to bring citizens on board of the EU – which is where Brussels utterly failed. Both sides now need to sell the future negotiation results in the best way to citizens, and politics certainly is about emotions. However, we need a good agreement for both sides – experience shows that historical win-lose situations have never worked out well in the long run; as in every relationship, forgiving each other needs to prevail over being right. Let us hope that a win-win solution is where we are heading once the first quarrels have been fought out! In the meantime, find the latest jobs and as usual more on politjobs.eu!
