Job Alert – Fresh Air and fresh Wind

Policymakers and everybody else in the EU bubble received a much-needed breath of fresh air on Sunday, at the traditional Car-free day organized by the City of Brussels. The time to catch fresh air is certainly available, as the BREXIT negotiations are again stalling. Boris Johnson’s BREXIT vision published just before Theresa May’s planned big speech in Florence, hinting at a showdown between the two, is not helping. As Commission officials put it, “the fog is rising from the meadows again”.

The EU is not out of work however. According to last week’s Commission President Juncker’s State of the Union speech, the “wind is back in the sail of Europe”, especially with regard to economic recovery, and member states together with EU legislators need to stay on course. On course this week means first ideas of the European Commission on digital taxation – hitting big online retailers. It also means trade again: the Canada-EU trade agreement CETA (which put Belgium’s Wallonia on the map) has now entered provisionally into force and may well haunt Brussels once again.

Finally, eyes are on Germany, where national elections are held on Sunday. No surprises are expected concerning Angela Merkel’s CDU coming out on top, but the race is tight between the liberal FDP, the Greens and the right-wing AFD. In any case, a signal showing where Juncker’s wind in the sails is coming from. If you want to help steer rather than just sail along, find jobs and as usual more on politjobs.eu!
