Job Alert – State of the Union

Brexit, refugee crisis, nationalist populism – Commission President’s State of the Union speech this week was a tour de force, addressing the many challenges the EU is currently facing. In his words: “Our European Union is, at least in part, in an existential crisis”. In the words of the German news magazine ZEIT online: power is more than ever with the member states than with the EU.

Although times seem particularly tough at the moment – power swings between nation states and the EU are part of the history of the Union and built into the system. Certainly nevertheless cause to worry, but it should make us more willing to tackle the challenges, face the conflicts and find smart ways out of it – and be flexible enough to accept that these ways may not necessarily be the same ways we have used for the past years.

Instead, Brussels seems in shock. Bureaucrats and policymakers seem afraid to get in touch with those citizens who may never have heard of a Commission Directorate General, who are angry and frightened about political decisions.

Public Affairs is about communicating. It’s not only a politician’s job to communicate, it’s also our job as Public Affairs professionals. Explaining the pros and cons of the Union, supporting unpolitical neighbours, friends and sports mates in getting involved in a constructive way.
