Job Alert – Big Politics and Big Business

Yet another Brussels traffic desaster with the major entry bridge from Wallonia into the city closed due to degradation (the main entrance from Wallonia), a ridiculous lobbying Italian scandal, Austrian elections, the murder of a political journalist in Malta –  these past two weeks have more to offer than this editorial can cover. The only area that is still not moving is Brexit – this week’s European Council is likely to reject the British request to advance talks on trade. Other member states are more worrying at the moment: Austria voted and elected a 31 year old political shooting star as their next leader. Most likely, he will form a coalition with the right-wing FPO – and Europe feels reminded of the times of Haider and EU sanctions against Austria. Times have really changed – now Germany will need to find ways to deal with 97 rightwing members of their future Parliament. The question is still who will need to deal with them – the „Jamaica coalition“ between the conservative CDU, the liberal FDP and the Greens is still far from being formed. Since the Social Democrats ruled out their participation in a coalition, this is the only viable option – leaving Liberals and Greens in a good position to bargain. The Dutch can finally say that they are a step further than the Germans but will need to prove that such a delicate framework can function: a deal has been struck and backed by the Parliamentary groups for a coalition of four (!) parties of one liberal, two conservative groups and the governing centre-right party.

Whilst member states are forming governments, Brussels only stands still in traffic: with the main entrance bridge from Wallonia down and less Wallonians in town, bigger regions get to stand in the limelight: the Italian business association Confindustria’s Brussels representative just tranferred over 600 000 Euro to a fake account – or more, or less. The Eurobubble is already surprised about anyone still falling for fake accounts – and for the freedom of maneuvre to transfer such amounts without counter-checks anywhere in the organisation – and even more that nobody inside Confindustria knows how large the actual damage is.

On a much more serious account, a twitter initiative is just swapping over to Europe: #Metoo is the reaction of women all over the world to the scandal around Hollywood filmmaker Harvey Weinstein. #Metoo is a retweet of all women who have experienced sexual harassment, with the goal of destigmatising and initiating a debate. I will get personal now: #metoo. In the Eurobubble just as anywhere else. Time to talk about it.
