Job Alert – Busy Business

2018 has slowly but intensively started, and it promises to become a busy year: it is the last year before the end of the current Commission’s period in 2019 where legislative initiatives can be successfully launched. The Commission’s Directorate Generals are consequently working their heads off, and we can expect a good number of impact assessments – a precondition to most proposals – coming our way very shortly.

Member States are contributing their share to the schedule. Austria’s newly formed right/far-right government coalition to cut social benefits for children living abroad and is taking a tough stand on migration in Europe; in Germany, a governing coalition still needs to be formed, with highly diverging views between the negotiation partners – also especially on migration.

Meanwhile another big member state, Italy, is busy with domestic politics and is calling citizens to vote again: after the Parliament’s dissolution at the end of 2017 due to divisions between and within the governing coalition parties – business as usual in Italy. Spain, and Catalonia, on the other hand, are keeping astonishingly quiet at the beginning of the year. In any case, steering successfully through the next six months is no easy task for the new Bulgarian Presidency – and Bulgaria is also troubled by internal problems, of a serious nature: a number of murders of high-ranking individuals is shaking the country, putting corruption and serious crime into the spotlight.

Yet one more member state is to be mentioned: the UK. Brexit is still stuck. The year began with another proof of a rather instable British government: Theresa May announced to reshuffle and „refresh“ her cabinet – which she did eventually, but the process started out as an interesting exercise – some senior members simply refused to move from their chairs, and one of them, Justine Greening, even quit rather than becoming work and pensions secretary. Strong and stable? We will see. In any case, 2018 will need to bring results, for many reasons. The Brexit clock is ticking, and so is the clock on this EU Commission – 2018 is pushed to become fast-moving and interesting. That may be just the right time to become a part of the game. In this sense, a happy new year, and find attached some jobs and as usual more on politjobs.eu!
