Job Alert – Waffles and waffling in Brussels

Christmas is coming to Brussels with less waffles than one would expect: last week’s not-so-grey skies saw a huge fire evolving over the south of the city, as Milcamp’s waffle factory went up in flames. It has otherwise also been a bumpy period, with some ups and downs. German is surprisingly unstable at these moments, with failed coalition talks between four parties – currently, a renewed grand coalition between Social Democrats and Conservatives looks most likely, but no government can be expected until 2018 – not the least due to a controversial EU decision: the renewal of the Glyphosate license for another 5 years. Germany would have needed to abstain due to the lack of a mandated government, but the minister didn’t – causing a first row between the courting coalition parties. Whilst Germany is occupied with itself, this leaves Emmanuel Macron as the most important leader in the EU (who vowed to ban the weed killer, by the way).

Other matters finally move forward: the UK and the EU reached agreement on the money – more or less, in a typically European way. Whilst numbers are cited of something around 50 billion Euro, what has actually been agreed is the methodology of calculation; leaving a lot of scope for future disconsent. Meanwhile, another country has not asked to leave voluntarily, but is facing the EU’s “nuclear option”: due to continued issues regarding fundamental rights, the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary, the European Parliament has asked the Council of Ministers to prepare formal steps for triggering Art. 7: a procedure that could lead to the suspension of Poland’s voting rights. Serious, but a long road to go and a lot of communication needed between Poland and EU institutions. If you are a good communicator or want to become one, find attached some jobs and as usual more on politjobs.eu!
